Manipur police report death of suspected militant in encounter; AK-47, explosives seized

On 16 June, an encounter took place between security forces and suspected militants in the Molphei-Songkong village area of Churachandpur district, Manipur, resulting in the death of one individual, according to a statement from the Manipur Police. The deceased has been described as a “suspected militant” by the authorities.

The police statement, issued on Tuesday, said that information was received from the Assam Rifles regarding the encounter. A joint column of the Assam Rifles and the Indian Army was conducting operations in the region when it came into contact with a group of suspected militants between the two villages. During the exchange of fire, one suspected militant was killed. No casualties among the security forces were reported.

Following the incident, security personnel recovered one AK-47 rifle along with several magazines, ammunition, explosives, and other incriminating materials from the spot. The exact quantity and type of explosives were not specified by the police, but the recovery underscores the presence of armed elements in the area.

Manipur has been experiencing heightened security operations since ethnic violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in May 2023. The state has witnessed a series of clashes, and various armed groups are known to be active in several districts. Security forces, including the Army and Assam Rifles, have been deployed extensively to maintain law and order, and encounters with suspected militants occur sporadically. Churachandpur, a Kuki-dominated district, has been a focal point of the ongoing conflict.

Encounters such as this often raise questions about the use of force. Civil society groups and human rights organizations have in the past called for independent investigations into similar incidents. However, security forces maintain that they act within the legal framework in response to armed threats. The police statement did not mention whether a probe would be ordered, but in many such cases, a magisterial inquiry is conducted as per statutory requirements.

The area remains tense, and search operations are likely continuing. Further details about the identity of the deceased or the group to which he allegedly belonged have not been released. The police have urged the public to maintain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information.
