Manipur Governor Meets Home Minister Amit Shah to Discuss State’s Security

Amid continuing ethnic strife in Manipur, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. The discussion centred on the security situation in the northeastern state, which has witnessed a fresh wave of clashes between Kuki and Naga communities over the past month.

A senior government official stated that the overall security scenario was reviewed during the meeting. Governor Bhalla is believed to have apprised the Home Minister of the ground situation. The Union Home Ministry confirmed the meeting via a post on X: “Governor of Manipur Shri @BhallaAjay26 met Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri @AmitShah today.” No further details were made public.

The violence in Manipur originally broke out on May 3, 2023, between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities. Since then, the ethnic conflict has resulted in the loss of more than 260 lives. Despite various peace initiatives, tensions have periodically resurfaced, with recent months seeing a spillover into Kuki-Naga friction.

Following a year-long spell of President’s Rule, the elected government in Manipur was reinstated on February 4, 2026. The council of ministers includes Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, and two Deputy Chief Ministers: Losii Dikho and Nemcha Kipgen. Dikho and Kipgen represent the Naga and Kuki communities, respectively, in a bid to ensure inclusive governance.

However, the full cabinet expansion is still awaited, even as the state prepares for assembly elections scheduled for early next year. Notably, Deputy Chief Minister Kipgen, who took the oath of office virtually from Delhi, has yet to travel to Imphal and continues to attend all official meetings online. This arrangement highlights the complex security and political dynamics in the state.

The meeting between the Governor and the Home Minister underscores the central government’s ongoing engagement with the situation in Manipur. Authorities remain focused on restoring peace and stability through a combination of security measures and political outreach.
