Mandhana 74, Verma all-round show steer India to 95-run win over Netherlands in T20 World Cup
India secured their second successive victory in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, defeating the Netherlands by 95 runs at Headingley on Wednesday. The comprehensive win was built on a century opening stand between Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, followed by a clinical bowling display led by left-arm spinner Shree Charani. However, the match also saw an injury to India’s off-spinner Shreyanka Patil, who twisted her right ankle while bowling and was stretchered off the field.
Sent in to bat, India’s openers responded emphatically to captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s call for improved powerplay performances. Mandhana and Verma put together 115 runs in just under 12 overs, setting a solid foundation. Mandhana was elegant from the start, driving fluently whenever the Dutch seamers overpitched, while Verma initially played a supporting role before accelerating with powerful pulls and cuts. India raced to 59 without loss in the powerplay, and by the halfway mark they had reached 96/0, with both batters in complete control. The Netherlands bowlers compounded their struggles with 18 wides and other extras, adding to the total.
Verma was the first to reach her fifty, bringing up her maiden T20 World Cup half-century off 32 balls. The partnership was broken in the 12th over when Heather Siegers dismissed Verma for a well-made 55 (38 balls, 6 fours, 2 sixes). Mandhana continued to score freely, reaching her second consecutive fifty of the tournament, and added 47 runs in 26 balls with Jemimah Rodrigues for the second wicket. Mandhana eventually fell for a stylish 74 off 47 deliveries, including 8 fours and 2 sixes. Late contributions from Richa Ghosh (20 off 12) and Deepti Sharma (10 off 2 balls) propelled India to an imposing 209 for 4.
Defending a large total, India’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure. Debutant Nandni Sharma struck early, dismissing opener Heather Siegers for 21, while Deepti Sharma removed Phebe Molkenboer to leave the Netherlands at 50 for 2. Shafali Verma, drafted into the attack due to Patil’s injury, broke a budding partnership between Babette de Leede and Sterre Kalis. But it was Charani who turned the match into a rout. The left-arm spinner, coming off a three-wicket haul in the previous game, delivered an incisive spell of 4 for 19, extracting turn and bounce to repeatedly trouble the batters. She received excellent support from Nandni Sharma, who finished with 2 for 21, as the Netherlands slid to 77 for 3 and then lost wickets at regular intervals. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur used seven bowlers to maintain the pressure.
Netherlands captain de Leede top-scored with 28, but lacked support from the other end. The required run rate climbed steeply, and the batting side never recovered. India’s spinners combined for 6 wickets, and the fielding was sharp, resulting in a comfortable win with 95 runs to spare. The Netherlands were eventually restricted to 114 for 8 in their 20 overs.
The victory keeps India unbeaten in the group stage, but the injury to Shreyanka Patil remains a concern for the team management. Patil, who has been a key bowler, twisted her ankle on the first ball of her spell and had to be carried off the field. The team will hope for a quick recovery as they look ahead to tougher contests in the tournament.
