Man arrested for setting woman ablaze in Nellore; victim stable
In a disturbing incident in the SPSR Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, police have arrested a man for allegedly pouring petrol on a woman from the tribal community and setting her on fire. The attack took place on the night of Thursday at North Tribal Colony, within the limits of Kota panchayat in Kota mandal. The accused was taken into custody within hours of the incident, following swift action by the local police.
The victim has been identified as Molakala Sudha, also known as Vijayamma. According to police, she had been living separately from her husband for several years and was residing with her two children at her mother's house in the colony. While she was sleeping on the floor, the accused allegedly poured petrol on her and ignited it, causing severe burn injuries.
Acting on a complaint filed by the victim, the police launched an immediate investigation. District Superintendent of Police Ajita Vejendla directed the team to take urgent action. Gudur Rural Circle Inspector Kishore Babu, Kota Sub-Inspector Pavan Kumar, and their team apprehended the suspect within hours of the attack.
During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to the crime. However, the police are gathering full details and are investigating the underlying reasons behind the attack. No official statement has been released yet regarding the motive, and the police have not ruled out any possibilities.
The victim was initially taken to Kota Government Hospital for primary treatment. Considering the severity of her burn injuries, she was later transferred to Ruia Hospital in Tirupati in a special ambulance. According to doctors attending to her, her condition is currently stable, and she is undergoing emergency treatment.
This incident has raised concerns about the safety of women, particularly from marginalised tribal communities, who often face additional vulnerabilities. The police have assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that the accused will face legal consequences as per the law.
Local residents have expressed shock over the incident, with many demanding strict action against the accused. The police have urged the public not to spread rumours and have said that more details will be shared as the investigation progresses.
