Man Arrested for Rape-Murder of 4-Year-Old in Gujarat Shot Dead by Police
A 25-year-old man arrested for the alleged abduction and murder of a four-year-old girl from Vasad railway station in Gujarat's Anand district was shot dead by police on Monday morning. The incident occurred when he allegedly attempted to escape from custody, according to authorities.
The accused was being transported from Borsad, where he was apprehended, to Anand when he reportedly asked the driver to stop the vehicle, claiming he felt unwell. Once the vehicle stopped, he allegedly attacked two constables with a knife, injuring both, police said.
A senior police officer stated that the officers repeatedly warned the accused to surrender, but he continued the assault. The officer described the shooting as an act of self-defence necessitated by the accused's attack on the escorting policemen.
The incident has raised questions about police procedures, as such encounters in custody are subject to judicial scrutiny. An investigation into the circumstances of the shooting is expected to follow standard protocols.
The accused had been taken into custody earlier in connection with the case. The identity of the accused is being withheld pending notification of family members, in accordance with privacy norms.
