A major fire broke out in a three-storey commercial building near the Collectorate in Thoothukudi on Sunday morning, causing extensive damage to a two-wheeler service centre, a motorcycle showroom, and a finance company office. The fire was reported at approximately 9:30 a.m., and it took firefighting crews around three hours to bring the blaze under control. The building is located on the Thoothukudi-Palayamkottai Road, a major thoroughfare that connects Thoothukudi with neighbouring towns.

The commercial complex housed a motorcycle showroom on the ground floor, a two-wheeler service centre on the first floor, and the finance company branch of a private sector bank on the second floor. According to police, the fire originated in the service centre, which stored oil, lubricants, and other inflammable materials. These substances fuelled the flames, causing them to spread rapidly to other parts of the building. Within a short time, the fire engulfed the showroom and the finance company office, leading to extensive damage across all floors.

The fire department received an alert shortly after the blaze was noticed and dispatched eight fire tenders to the location. Firefighters encountered challenging conditions, including dense smoke and intense heat, as they worked to bring the situation under control.
