Maharashtra TET: Hijab and Dupatta Allowed, but Face Must Remain Uncovered

The Maharashtra State Council of Examination (MSCE) has clarified that female candidates may wear hijab, burka, or dupatta during the Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), but no clothing that covers the face above the neck will be permitted. The test is scheduled for June 28.

Earlier instructions from the council had banned hijab, burka, mask, or cap during the exam, prompting several female candidates to request a relaxation. In response, the council cited a 2024 Bombay High Court judgment (Zainab Abdul Qayyum Choudhary Vs Chembur Trombay Edu.Society) which upheld a college's dress code and ruled that wearing hijab or naqab is not an essential religious practice.

The council also noted that other national examinations like UPSC and SSC do not allow clothing that covers the face, and the new rule aligns with this standard.
