Maharashtra sets up task force to implement drone policy, address industry concerns
The Maharashtra government has announced the formation of a ministerial task force to implement the state’s drone policy. The task force, chaired by Electronics, Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence Minister Ashish Shelar, will work under the department to strengthen the existing drone ecosystem and attract new investments.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made the announcement on Thursday (August 13, 2026) during a meeting with representatives of drone manufacturing companies at the Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai. He said the policy is intended to support existing companies and draw fresh investments into the sector. The task force is expected to streamline implementation and resolve procedural bottlenecks.
The decision comes against the backdrop of delays in policy drafting and conflicts over its provisions. Industry stakeholders had earlier expressed concerns such as a lack of competitive incentives compared to other states. The new task force is tasked with reviewing these issues and ensuring that the policy's benefits reach businesses effectively.
During the meeting, Mr. Fadnavis also asked for a “policy of policies” that consolidates several provisions from state policies covering research and development (R&D). This approach aims to create a unified framework that simplifies compliance and encourages innovation in the drone sector.
The meeting also addressed a letter written by BJP leader Dhananjay Mahadik, who had urged the Chief Minister to order an inquiry into an alleged conflict of interest involving consultants engaged in drafting the policy. Mahadik had warned that the consultants’ involvement could negatively affect local businesses, drone training operators, and women entrepreneurs. The agenda of the meeting included seeking suggestions and expectations from industry stakeholders on this matter.
In June, the state government approved the Maharashtra Automated Systems Policy 2026, which targets ₹25,000 crore in investments and aims to generate over 1,00,000 jobs. The policy is seen as a major step towards making Maharashtra a hub for drone and autonomous systems manufacturing.
Mr. Fadnavis also instructed officials to accelerate the development of a ‘Drone City’ in the industrial area of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. He said a special incentive policy should be considered for the next two to three years to provide land for the drone industry through the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). This move is expected to boost ancillary industries and create employment opportunities in the region.
