Maharashtra Medical Aspirant Dies by Suicide; Note Cites Disappointment Over NEET Re-exam Marks
A 19-year-old medical aspirant was found dead at her home in Jalalpur village, Karjat taluka, Ahilyanagar district, on July 25. Police said she left a note indicating distress over her performance in the NEET-UG re-examination.
According to Karjat police, the woman, identified as Sharvari (name changed), scored 166 marks in the NEET re-exam held on June 21, falling short of the category cutoff of 177 by 10 marks. The re-exam was conducted after the original NEET UG 2024 exam on May 3 was cancelled on May 12 due to a question paper leak.
Karjat Sub-Divisional Police Officer Sujeetkumar Kshirsagar said, “As per preliminary investigation, she was under stress over her performance. The note mentioned that she scored less marks and was disappointed. An accidental death report has been registered.”
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. She belonged to a farming family and is survived by her parents and brother.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted the NEET re-exam on June 21 after the original exam, attempted by about 2.27 million aspirants, was cancelled. Results were announced on July 16.
Her uncle told media, “She was confident about the May 3 NEET examination as her papers went well. However, in the re-exam she scored 166 marks, falling short of 10 marks in her category cutoff. Thereafter, she looked tensed.”
The article also noted that a 37-day protest demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over NEET irregularities ended on the same day. However, the minister did not resign.
