Magnitude 4.2 Earthquake Hits Western Nepal, Tremors Felt in Neighbouring Districts
A moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.2 struck western Nepal early on Wednesday, according to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre (NEMRC). The quake occurred at 4:40 am local time, with its epicentre near Kotdewal in Bajhang district, Sudurpaschim Province, approximately 900 kilometres west of Kathmandu.
Tremors were also reported in the neighbouring districts of Bajura and Darchula. No immediate casualties or damage have been reported, and authorities are monitoring the situation.
Nepal lies in a seismically active region, sitting on the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Earthquakes of this magnitude are common and typically do not cause significant destruction. The country experienced a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake in 2015, which killed nearly 9,000 people and damaged infrastructure.
Local officials have urged residents to remain cautious but calm. The NEMRC continues to track aftershocks, though none have been recorded so far.
