Madurai Meenakshi Temple Consecration Held After 17 Years, Thousands of Devotees Attend

Thousands of devotees from across Tamil Nadu and other States gathered at the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai on Thursday to witness the Kumbabishekam, the consecration ceremony of the temple, which was held after a gap of 17 years. The previous consecration was performed in April 2009.

Devotees began assembling at the temple and in the surrounding streets in the early hours of Thursday. Those holding passes were accommodated atop the temple mandapams to witness the ceremony.

The Kumbabishekam was performed at about 7.40 a.m. amid the chanting of hymns in Tamil and Sanskrit. On September 16, Lord Subramaniya Swamy and Goddess Deivanai were brought to the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple from the Thirupparankundram temple for the ceremony.

The rituals began on September 6, and the Yagasala pujas were held at the temple from September 11. Following special pujas in the early hours of Thursday, theertham (holy water) was poured over the kalasams atop the gopurams and the vimanams. The gopurams were decorated with garlands and the entire temple complex was illuminated.

As deeparadhana was performed, devotees stood with folded hands and offered prayers. Theertham was sprayed on the devotees using drones and hose pipes, and many collected the sacred water in bottles. After the consecration ceremony, devotees were permitted to enter the temple for darshan.

The Kumbabishekam is a ritual of consecration performed at temples at intervals prescribed by tradition, during which the sanctity of the deity and the temple structures is renewed. The Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar, is among the largest and most visited temple complexes in Tamil Nadu and draws pilgrims throughout the year. Much of its present architecture dates to the 16th and 17th centuries, when the complex was expanded under the Nayak rulers of Madurai.

Renovation works were carried out ahead of the ceremony. According to the temple administration, these included 86 projects at a cost of ₹15.40 crore funded by the temple and 100 projects costing ₹16.89 crore funded by donors, taking the total expenditure to ₹32.29 crore. The renovated Veera Vasantharayar Mandapam was inaugurated on August 30.

Giant LED screens were installed at strategic locations so that devotees could watch the event. A large number of police personnel were deployed to ensure the safety and security of devotees and the smooth conduct of the ceremony. Ambulances with medical teams and fire tenders were stationed on the Chithirai streets, and drinking water and mobile toilets were provided for devotees.
