Madras High Court Ends Contempt Case Against YouTuber Savukku Shankar
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday disposed of the suo motu contempt proceedings initiated against YouTuber ‘Savukku’ Shankar in 2022 for his remarks on the higher judiciary.
A Division Bench of Justices G.R. Swaminathan and B. Pugalendhi stated that no further orders were required, bringing the contempt case to a close.
In 2022, the court had sentenced Mr. Shankar to six months of simple imprisonment for his comments. However, the Supreme Court later suspended the sentence and directed the High Court to set terms and conditions for the suspension. Following this directive, the High Court had imposed certain conditions, which were reportedly complied with.
The disposal of the case marks the end of the legal proceedings that began over remarks made by Shankar, a known critic of the judiciary, on his YouTube channel. The High Court's decision to close the matter without further action indicates that the conditions set earlier have been fulfilled.
