Mac Allister Strikes: Argentina Lead Switzerland 1-0 in World Cup Quarterfinal

The FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal between Argentina and Switzerland kicked off at the Kansas City stadium on July 12, with Alexis Mac Allister scoring to give Argentina a 1-0 lead.

Argentina, the defending champions, entered the match on an unbeaten run stretching back to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Switzerland, however, had conceded only three goals in five matches in this tournament, relying on a disciplined defence led by Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji, and goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

The confirmed lineups were as follows:

Argentina: Emiliano Martinez (GK), Nahuel Molina, Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martinez, Nicolas Tagliafico, Rodrigo De Paul, Leandro Paredes, Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister, Julian Alvarez, Lionel Messi.

Switzerland: Gregor Kobel (GK), Denis Zakaria, Manuel Akanji, Nico Elvedi, Ricardo Rodriguez, Remo Freuler, Granit Xhaka, Dan Ndoye, Fabian Rieder, Djibril Sow, Breel Embolo.

The goal came from a well-worked move, with Mac Allister finding space in the box to slot home. Switzerland will now look to respond and equalise as the match progresses.
