Lieutenant General Rajesh Pushkar on Wednesday assumed charge as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Pune-headquartered Southern Command. He succeeds Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain, who has taken over as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Lt Gen Pushkar was commissioned into the 74 Armoured Regiment in December 1988. His career spans over four decades, during which he has held a wide range of command, staff and instructional appointments across diverse geographical and operational environments.
According to an Indian Army statement, “The General Officer has had an illustrious and distinguished military career spanning over four decades. During his service, he has held a wide range of command, staff and instructional appointments across diverse geographical and operational environments. Lieutenant General Rajesh Pushkar provided decisive leadership and strategic foresight as General Officer Commanding 2 Corps during Operation Sindoor.”
Operation Sindoor is a notable military exercise focusing on integrated battle drills and joint operations, reflecting the Army's preparedness in complex scenarios. His leadership of 2 Corps during this operation underscores his tactical acumen and ability to handle high-stakes assignments.
Southern Command is one of the seven operational commands of the Indian Army, responsible for the country's southern region, including major cities like Pune, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. It plays a crucial role in maintaining security and readiness in the western and southern sectors. The command has a rich history, having been involved in multiple operations and exercises that enhance the Army's combat capabilities.
Lt Gen Pushkar's appointment comes at a time when the Indian Army is focusing on modernization and jointmanship among the three services. His experience in armoured warfare and command of a strike corps will be valuable in overseeing the Southern Command's contributions to national defence.
The change of command ceremony was held at the Southern Command headquarters in Pune, where Lt Gen Pushkar reviewed a guard of honour and addressed the troops. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high operational readiness and professionalism. “I am honoured to lead this prestigious command. Together, we will continue to uphold the highest standards of duty and service to the nation,” he said.
