Lovepreet Singh's heroic lift earns silver, misses gold by 1kg at Commonwealth Games

Weightlifter Lovepreet Singh secured a silver medal for India in the men's 110+kg final at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday, finishing just one kilogram behind the gold medalist. The competition, held on the eighth day of the Games, saw Lovepreet deliver an impressive performance in both the snatch and clean and jerk events.

Lovepreet took an early lead in the snatch category with three successful lifts, his highest being 176kg. He continued his strong showing in the clean and jerk, where he lifted a maximum of 212kg, bringing his combined total to 388kg. However, New Zealand's David Andrew Liti staged a comeback in the clean and jerk, lifting 223kg to finish with a combined total of 389kg, pipping Lovepreet by just 1kg.

Despite the narrow loss, Lovepreet's silver medal added to India's success in weightlifting at these Games, bringing the country's total to nine medals in weightlifting and para-weightlifting events combined. His performance highlighted India's growing strength in the sport, with several lifters achieving podium finishes.

Lovepreet, who hails from Punjab, has been a consistent performer on the international stage. His achievement at the Commonwealth Games reflects years of dedication and training. The Indian contingent has been celebrating multiple medal wins across disciplines, and Lovepreet's contribution further boosts the nation's standing in the medal tally.
