Lightning strikes kill four, injure eight in Madhya Pradesh district

Four people died and eight others were injured in two separate lightning strike incidents in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh on Friday, June 26, 2026, police confirmed on Saturday.

The incidents occurred within the Baihar and Garhi police station limits, according to officials. Baihar police station in-charge Jayant Marskole reported that Satish Walke (19) and Lucky Meravi (18) died instantly in Bhamori near Birwa after being struck. Jhaam Singh Taram (34) succumbed to injuries during treatment at a hospital.

Two seriously injured individuals were transferred to the district hospital, while four others are receiving treatment at Baihar Hospital. In a separate incident under Garhi police station, Chandravati Pusam (39), a resident of Nunkatola, was struck in Komo village. Two injured persons are undergoing treatment, police said.

Lightning strikes are common during the monsoon season in India, which typically runs from June to September. The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings for thunderstorms and lightning in several regions. Authorities advise people to seek shelter indoors during storms and avoid open fields, water bodies, and tall objects.

Local administration has announced compensation for the families of the deceased under state disaster relief funds. The injured are being provided medical assistance.
