LG Sandhu Urges Delhi to Become 'Global Capital' as Supreme Court Expands

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Tuesday addressed members of the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia, emphasising that the city's narrative is one of continuity rather than mere transformation through history. Sandhu, who was appointed to the post with a stated goal of evolving Delhi into a 'global capital', highlighted the city's special responsibility to fulfil Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of the world viewing India 'with new confidence, and new expectations'.

Separately, the Supreme Court complex is undergoing expansion to accommodate the increased strength of judges. In May, the government raised the number of Supreme Court judges from 34 to 38, and five new judges took office in June. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) is converting seven rooms on the first floor of the West Wing of the main complex into two additional courtrooms. The work involves demolishing existing walls to create the courtrooms, and the contractor has been instructed to avoid using explosives or creating excessive noise to ensure that judicial work is not disrupted.
