Legendary Playback Singer S. Janaki Dies at 88 in Mysuru
Veteran playback singer S. Janaki, who lent her voice to thousands of songs across South Indian languages, passed away at the age of 88 in Mysuru, Karnataka, on Saturday, July 11, 2026.
Janaki was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Mysuru in the early hours of Saturday after developing health complications. Despite treatment, she did not recover and breathed her last in the evening, according to family sources. The singer had been residing in Bogadi, Mysuru, for the past few years.
Known for her versatile voice, Janaki sang across generations and worked with virtually every major music director in South India, from S. Rajeswara Rao and K.V. Mahadevan to Ilayaraja and A.R. Rahman. Her contributions to Indian film music remain unparalleled.
