Law Student Abducted and Assaulted in Dhaka; Motive Unclear
A 25-year-old law student, who also serves as a temple priest, was allegedly abducted and assaulted by unidentified individuals in Dhaka, Bangladesh, according to local media reports on Tuesday.
Subhash Deuri, a student at Jagannath University in Dhaka, was taken late Monday night. His friends found him unconscious on a street in Old Dhaka early Tuesday morning and admitted him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Police officer Mohammad Faruk confirmed that Deuri was admitted in critical condition around 7 a.m. local time and is receiving treatment. No police complaint has been filed yet.
Kajal Debnath, spokesperson for the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, stated, “We have heard of the incident and are trying to get the details and ascertain if it was just a case of mugging.”
Deuri's roommate, Durjoy Saha, reported receiving a call from Deuri's phone demanding money. He could not comply. Deuri's sister, Jaya, received a similar call at 1 a.m., with a demand for 30,000 Bangladeshi Taka. After transferring 26,000 Taka to an account provided by the caller, Deuri was released in Old Dhaka.
Saha said Deuri told him he was physically and mentally tortured, stripped, and blackmailed to contact his family. His phone and wallet were missing.
Deuri, originally from Magura district in Khulna, lives in a rented apartment in Dhaka. It remains unclear whether his faith was a factor in the attack.
