Landslip at Adoormala in Kerala's Idukki kills woman, injures two as heavy rains disrupt life
At least one woman was killed and two others injured after a landslip struck a house at Adoormala in Kudayathoor panchayat, Thodupuzha, in Kerala's Idukki district early on Saturday (August 1, 2026). The incident occurred around 2 a.m. when torrential rain triggered multiple landslips across the hilly district.
The victims were identified as Sumathi, her husband Mashikkalel Ravi Narayanan, and their son Ratheesh. According to police, the landslip hit their home while the family was asleep. Local residents managed to pull Ravi and Ratheesh out of the debris with injuries, but Sumathi went missing. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Fire and Rescue Force recovered her body later on Saturday morning.
The disaster has been compounded by widespread disruption to road connectivity. A landslip at Pullupara, near Kuttikkanam, blocked a stretch of the Kottarakkara–Dindigul National Highway, halting traffic on the Kuttikkanam–Mundakkayam route. Waterlogging was also reported at Churakkulam Junction near Vandiperiyar after a nearby stream overflowed, leading to flooding at the government hospital in the area.
Further damage was reported along the Kochi–Dhanushkodi National Highway, which leads to the tourist town of Munnar. A landslip at Machiplavu cut off this key artery. In a separate incident, falling mud struck a police vehicle at Mathayippara, near Upputhara, though no injuries were reported.
With water levels rising in rivers and reservoirs, authorities opened the shutters of the Malankara, Pambla, and Kallarkutty dams as a precautionary measure. The release of water is expected to continue as long as heavy rainfall persists, and residents downstream have been advised to stay alert.
In response to the continuing downpour, the Idukki District Collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions in the district on Saturday. The move aims to ensure the safety of students and staff amid the adverse weather conditions.
Idukki district, located in the Western Ghats, is highly vulnerable to landslips during the southwest monsoon. The region has witnessed several such disasters in the past, with devastating landslides in 2020 and 2021 claiming numerous lives. Geologists point to a combination of steep slopes, fragile soil, and heavy rainfall as key factors behind these recurring events.
District authorities have set up relief camps and are monitoring vulnerable areas. The NDRF, along with local police and fire services, continues to carry out search and rescue operations. Meteorological officials have warned of intense rainfall across Kerala over the next 48 hours, urging people in hilly areas to remain vigilant.
Officials have also advised against travel to Idukki and neighboring districts unless absolutely necessary. Several roads remain closed, and alternative routes are being identified. The public has been urged to report any signs of landslip or waterlogging to emergency helplines.
The state government has promised all possible assistance to the affected family and assured that compensation will be paid as per existing norms. A detailed assessment of the damage is expected once the rains subside.
