Ladakh Activist Sonam Wangchuk Sets June 27 Ultimatum for Government on NEET and Ladakh Demands

Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent activist from Ladakh, has announced a deadline of June 27 for the central government to resolve at least one of the key issues concerning the region, including the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) controversy and the demand for constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule. Wangchuk warned that if no progress is made, he will begin an indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

The NEET issue pertains to the difficulties faced by Ladakhi students due to the lack of a regional language option in the exam. Ladakh demands inclusion of Bhoti or Urdu as mediums for the test. Additionally, the region seeks protection of its culture and land rights under the Sixth Schedule, a status already granted to some tribal areas in the Northeast.

Wangchuk's announcement comes amid growing frustration among Ladakh's civil society over the lack of response from the government. He emphasized that the deadline is a call for action, not confrontation, and urged the government to engage in dialogue. The June 27 date marks the expiry of a previous memorandum submitted to the home ministry.

The government has not yet officially responded to Wangchuk's latest statement. However, sources indicate that discussions are ongoing within the ministry of home affairs regarding Ladakh's demands. The situation remains tense as activists prepare for possible protests.
