Kozhikode Rains: Orange Alert, Over 960 in Relief Camps as Downpour Continues
Kozhikode district in Kerala continued to receive heavy rainfall for the third consecutive day on Monday (August 3, 2026), with low-lying areas in several parts remaining submerged. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert predicting very heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds on Tuesday (August 4, 2026).
The district administration declared a holiday for educational institutions for the second consecutive day in view of the persistent rain in upland and coastal regions. However, examinations that were scheduled earlier and online classes will proceed as usual.
According to district officials, as of Monday evening, 964 people from 365 families were staying in 32 relief camps across the district. The camp population includes 376 men, 418 women, and 170 children. The highest number of people, 701 from 260 families, are housed in 15 camps in Kozhikode taluk. Thamarassery taluk has 165 people, Vadakara taluk 80, and Koyilandy taluk 18.
Meanwhile, around 200 families were affected after parts of the Kannadikkal-Parambil Bazar area were inundated following a rise in the water level of the Poonoor River. Residents were shifted to safer locations after low-lying areas went under water, and power supply in the area was switched off for safety. The IMD had initially issued a yellow alert for Monday, but later revised it to an orange alert.
Several incidents of partial house collapses have been reported. In Velliparamba, an autorickshaw driver named Noushad, along with his wife and two children, had a narrow escape in the early hours of Monday when part of their house collapsed. The family ran outside after hearing a loud sound around 3 a.m. The kitchen, one washroom, and work area were completely damaged, along with household utensils. Noushad and his wife were sleeping next to the kitchen at the time.
In another incident, Ajayakumar of Nadakkavu in Kozhikode city experienced a wall collapse inside his house on Sunday night while he was watching television with his family. They have since been shifted to another residence. Reports also indicate that wells caved in at Odumbra and Chalappuram, while low-lying areas in Mavoor are facing waterlogging.
Authorities have asked people living on the banks of the Kuttiyadi River to remain alert, as two spillway gates of the Kakkayam Dam have been opened to safely discharge water. The district administration continues to monitor the situation and is coordinating relief efforts across the affected regions.
