Kollam Marks 80th I-Day with Parade, Minister Hails Spirit of Freedom
Kollam celebrated the 80th Independence Day with a solemn ceremony at the Asramam ground on Saturday, where Minister for Forest, Wildlife and Skill Development Shibu Baby John hoisted the national flag and took the salute at the parade. The event, which began at 9 a.m., saw the participation of a large contingent of uniformed personnel and schoolchildren, reflecting the spirit of unity and patriotism.
In his address after the flag hoisting, the Minister paid rich tributes to the countless freedom fighters whose lifelong dedication and immense sacrifices made independence possible. He described democracy and secularism as a grand, sheltering tree that continues to flourish across the country. His remarks underscored the enduring values that form the foundation of the Indian republic.
The Minister also touched upon contemporary challenges, particularly the recurring natural disasters that have affected the State. He said that the government is actively taking precautions and continuing its efforts to protect people from wildlife incursions. He expressed deep appreciation for the fishing community, which he said voluntarily steps forward to lead relief and rescue operations during crises, setting an example of community service.
The official ceremony commenced with District Collector Anie Jula Thomas receiving the Minister upon his arrival at the grounds. District Police Chief (Kollam City) M. Hemalatha and District Police Chief (Kollam Rural) Shaji Sugunan also received the salute. A total of 23 platoons took part in the parade, including contingents from the Police, Excise, Forest, Student Police Cadet (SPC), NCC, Scouts and Guides, and Junior Red Cross.
The parade was enriched by the rhythmic performances of band platoons from GHS Pooyappally, Christ Raj HSS, SPC Kollam, and Infant Jesus Anglo-Indian HSS. The parade was commanded by K. Mahesh, Reserve Inspector at the District Police Headquarters, with V. Dinesan, Sub-Inspector at the DHQ Camp, serving as the Second-in-Command. The Minister presented mementos to the participating platoons as a token of appreciation for their disciplined display.
The event concluded with the rendition of the National Anthem by a team from the Government TTI. The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Mayor A.K. Hafeez, District Panchayat president R. Lathadevi, Sub-collector Akhil V. Menon, Deputy Mayor Dr. Karumalil Udaya Sukumaran, ADM S. Sajeed and Kollam tehsildar A.S. Ajilal. Their presence underscored the importance of the occasion and the collective commitment to the nation's ideals.
