Kolkata Police STF Breaks Interstate Drug Ring in Purulia, Detains 7

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, that the Kolkata Police Special Task Force (STF) has disrupted an interstate drug trafficking network, detaining seven individuals during an operation in Purulia district.

The operation, conducted in coordination with the Purulia district police, took place on Monday night near the Belkuri Toll Plaza on National Highway 18, under the jurisdiction of the Purulia Muffasil Police Station. A truck was intercepted, leading to the seizure of a large quantity of ganja. The exact amount and value of the contraband have not been disclosed by the Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister stated that the drugs were found in a specially concealed cavity behind the driver's seat of the truck. Two escort vehicles travelling alongside the truck from Odisha towards Asansol were also intercepted, resulting in the detention of seven people.

Mr. Adhikari commended the action in a post on social media platform X, saying, 'I commend the swift, coordinated and resolute action of our Law Enforcement Agencies.' He reiterated the state government's zero-tolerance policy towards illegal drug trafficking and any unlawful activities that threaten public safety, particularly the well-being of youth and society.

The Chief Minister also praised the police personnel for their vigilance and dedication, vowing to continue rooting out criminal networks. This operation is part of ongoing efforts by West Bengal Police to curb drug smuggling along the Odisha-Bengal border, a known corridor for illicit drug transport.

The detained individuals are being questioned, and further investigations are underway to trace the broader network. The Kolkata Police STF has been active in recent months, targeting drug trafficking and other organized crime in the region.
