Kolkata NEET Protest Violence: Two More Arrested, Police Reconstruct Crime Scene with 14 Accused
The Kolkata Police on Monday arrested two more individuals in connection with the violence that erupted during a protest over the NEET exam, bringing the total number of accused in custody to 16. The police also conducted a reconstruction of the crime scene, parading 14 of the accused who were arrested earlier, during which they were made to walk barefoot wearing Bermuda shorts.
The two newly arrested individuals have been identified as Wakar Azam from Karaya and Javed Akhtar from Nadia. According to police officials, neither of them is a student. The arrests were made following analysis of evidence, including CCTV footage, media videos, eyewitness statements, and digital evidence.
The violence occurred on Friday during a protest march from Sealdah to Dorina Crossing. During the march, a section of the protesters allegedly targeted journalists and police personnel, resulting in injuries and damage to property. The police have been investigating the incident to identify and apprehend those responsible.
During the reconstruction of the crime scene on Monday, each of the 14 accused narrated their actions during the protest, including where they came from, what they did, and where they went afterwards. The police stated that this exercise would help clarify the roles of the accused and provide important clues for the ongoing investigation.
The police have not yet commented on the decision to parade the accused barefoot or the legal implications of such an action. The accused are expected to be produced in court for further legal proceedings.
The NEET protest violence has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for a thorough investigation and strict action against those involved. The police have assured that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure justice and maintain public order.
