Kochi: Cooperative bank gold appraiser arrested in ₹89 lakh loan fraud
The Njarackal police in Kochi on Sunday arrested a 44-year-old man for allegedly misappropriating ₹89 lakh through fraudulent gold loans at a cooperative society where he was employed. The accused has been identified as Anoop C.J., a resident of Malippuram, Elamkunnapuzha, and a gold appraiser at the Karuthedam Rural Service Cooperative Society.
According to police, Anoop allegedly abused his position to record that the bank had accepted 1,565.9 grams of gold as collateral between January 2014 and June 2024. Based on these fake pledge entries, loans were issued to individuals who had not actually deposited any gold. The fraud came to light during an internal audit, following which the society lodged a complaint with the police.
The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with criminal breach of trust, cheating, and forgery. Further investigation is underway, and police sources said they are also probing Anoop's other financial dealings to ascertain whether similar irregularities occurred elsewhere.
Cooperative societies play a significant role in rural banking and lending in Kerala, often providing gold loans to farmers and small businesses. Police have not yet commented on whether the accused has been remanded in judicial custody or granted bail. The officer also urged anyone with information about the accused's financial transactions to come forward.
Local residents expressed shock at the arrest, noting that Anoop was a familiar figure in the area and had been associated with the society for many years. Authorities have assured that the legal process will be followed strictly and that the accused will be given a fair opportunity to defend himself.
