Kidambi Srikanth's Act of Sportsmanship Propels Him into US Open Final

Indian badminton star Kidambi Srikanth displayed remarkable sportsmanship during his US Open semifinal match against Japan's Yudai Okomoto in Fullerton, California. In a decisive moment, Srikanth voluntarily conceded a point that had been awarded to him after Okomoto argued that the shuttle had landed out. The incident occurred at 10-8 in the third game when Srikanth won a rally, but Okomoto insisted the shuttle was wide. Amidst controversy and a pro-Japanese crowd chanting 'Out,' Srikanth approached the referee and gave up the point, changing the score to 10-9. He then refocused to win the next point and eventually the match 22-20, 15-21, 21-19.

Srikanth's gesture is not out of character. His coach, Parupalli Kashyap, noted that Srikanth often calls close calls fairly in practice and matches, sometimes to his own detriment. 'We had to tell him, because he would get very upset when things went against him. Just because he’s fair, doesn’t mean others would be too!' Kashyap said. This honesty, however, has occasionally cost him matches, but in this semifinal, it helped diffuse tension and allowed him to regain his composure.

The match itself was a classic battle of styles. Srikanth, known for his high-risk, attacking play, took early leads but squandered them by going for risky shots near the lines. He served into the net at match point but recovered with a decisive push that landed on the line. His ability to bounce back from adversity reflects his resilience. Kashyap added, 'He’s inspiring for the new generation. He’s lost so many matches from match point. But he gets up, gets ready, fights again. Standing again.'

Srikanth's victory sets up a final appearance at the Super 300 tournament, offering him a chance to win his first title since the Malaysia Masters earlier this year. Despite frustrations from his coaches over his risky style, Srikanth remains committed to his approach. 'It’s the fun in badminton for him,' Kashyap observed. With this win, Srikanth not only advanced to the final but also reinforced the values of fair play and perseverance that define his career.
