Kharge raises Haldwani 'shuddhikaran' in Parliament, questions constitutional values
Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, on Tuesday raised the issue of a reported 'shuddhikaran' (purification ceremony) at Haldwani's Ramlila Ground, which took place after his public rally on August 8. Speaking in Parliament, Kharge said he had only spoken about public issues during the rally and questioned whether the subsequent ceremony was compatible with constitutional values, democracy and social justice.
Kharge's remarks come amid reports that a group performed a purification ritual at the ground after his address, allegedly over caste considerations. The incident has triggered a political controversy, with Opposition parties condemning the act as a clear case of caste discrimination and an affront to the principles enshrined in the Constitution.
'I only spoke about public issues during my rally. But after that, a 'shuddhikaran' was held at the same venue. Is this what our Constitution stands for? Does democracy and social justice permit such actions?' Kharge asked in the Rajya Sabha.
The Congress president's intervention highlights a broader debate about the persistence of caste-based practices in public spaces, despite constitutional prohibitions against untouchability and discrimination. The Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955, and the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, further provide legal remedies against discriminatory practices. In light of these provisions, Kharge's parliamentary intervention serves as a reminder that such incidents must be examined strictly within the framework of constitutional law.
