Kerala's 'Resurge' Night Walk: Women Reclaim Public Spaces, Demand Lasting Safety

Thiruvananthapuram witnessed a rare spectacle on Friday night as hundreds of women, joined by men, gathered along MG Road to celebrate a sense of freedom and safety in public spaces. The event, 'Resurge – Safe Women, Safe Kerala', was organised by the Kerala government's Women and Child Development department as part of Independence Day celebrations, from 9.30 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday.

The stretch from Connemara Market at Palayam to Ayurveda College Junction was transformed into a vibrant hub of activity, with women walking, dancing, singing, shopping, and engaging in various cultural programmes. Women bike riders, cyclists, Kalaripayattu students, young skaters, and home-based entrepreneurs were among those who participated, creating an atmosphere of joy and solidarity.

For many participants, the event was more than just a celebration. Nandana V., a law student at Government Law College, said that while Thiruvananthapuram is generally safe, women do face harassment at night. She noted that Friday's event allowed women to feel happy and free, taking videos and vlogging in the heart of the city without fear. However, she stressed that such freedom should not be limited to an organised event but should become an everyday reality.

Amritha Priya, a block panchayat member from Sasthamcotta, observed that while night walks have been held before, 'Resurge' was unique because it highlighted women's achievements, including entrepreneurship. She expressed happiness at seeing so many women turn out late at night and described the government's decision to open up a city stretch for women as a beginning of change.

Kala Rani, State women president of the Bahujana Sahitya Academy, appreciated the participation of children and men. She dismissed the notion that the event was tokenism, calling it a strong women's movement that sends a message to other countries. She also welcomed the presence of men standing alongside women, calling it a positive sign.

The event was inaugurated by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, who said the government's goal is to create an environment where women can go out at any time without fearing for their safety. "Kerala will be made a model for other States. Women's gatherings also give out the message that they have a clear role in societal change and socio-economic development of the State," he said.

The Chief Minister, along with Minister for Women and Child Development Bindhu Krishna and Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes K.A. Thulasi, walked from the inaugural venue to the Secretariat, interacting with participants on the way.

Participants echoed the sentiment that while one night of freedom may not instantly change societal mindsets, it provides courage and inspires the next generation to strive for lasting change. The event, part of the state's broader efforts to enhance women's safety, marked a symbolic step in the ongoing movement for gender equality and safe public spaces.
