Kerala sanctions ₹45.68 crore to boost government colleges
The Kerala government has sanctioned ₹45.68 crore for the development of infrastructure and human resources in government colleges across the State. The funds will be used for physical infrastructure, IT facilities, and initiatives aimed at improving academic excellence and learning outcomes.
According to an official statement quoting Higher Education Minister Roji M. John, the sanction order has been issued and covers new buildings, academic blocks, administrative centres, and other basic infrastructure. The move is intended to make government colleges more attractive and student-friendly.
A significant portion of the funding has been earmarked for specific institutions. ₹13.48 crore will be spent on a new administrative facility for Kesari Government Arts and Science College in Paravur, Ernakulam. Maharaja's College in Ernakulam will receive ₹5.6 crore for hostel and mess facilities. ₹4.81 crore has been allotted for a library and research block at Government College, Karyavattom, while ₹2.42 crore will go to Government Brennen College of Teacher Education in Thalassery.
Other allocations include ₹1.29 crore for an academic block and compound wall at Government Arts and Science College, Karunagapally; ₹1.34 crore for a new arts block at Government College, Madappally in Vadakara; ₹1.98 crore for a compound wall at Government College, Munnar; ₹1.27 crore for KKTM Government College, Kodungallur; ₹99.68 lakh for EKNM Government College, Elerithattu in Kasaragod; and ₹98.35 lakh for Government Arts and Science College, Tholanur in Palakkad.
The Minister said the funds are expected to create a better learning environment for students, increase research and innovation possibilities, and raise teaching-learning standards across government colleges. He emphasised that the development of these institutions is a priority for the State government.
To ensure timely implementation, Mr. John said the Director of Collegiate Education has been directed to avoid delays and expedite procedures so that construction work can begin soon.
The government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening the higher education sector through continued investments in government colleges.
