Kerala Rains: IMD Issues Red Alert for Eight Districts as Monsoon Intensifies

Thiruvananthapuram, August 4: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has upgraded its rain warning for Kerala, issuing a red alert for eight districts on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. The revised advisory, effective for the next 24 hours, cautions of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204 mm in the affected regions, prompting state authorities to brace for potential flooding and landslides.

According to the latest bulletin, the districts under red alert are Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. These areas are expected to witness rainfall well above the normal threshold, with intensities likely to disrupt daily life and infrastructure. The IMD's colour-coded warning system categorises red as the highest level, signifying the need for immediate action by emergency response agencies.

Meanwhile, an orange alert has been retained for Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, and Alappuzha, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated. Orange alerts indicate that significant weather is likely, and authorities are advised to remain prepared. A yellow alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, where isolated heavy rainfall may occur, but the risk of widespread disruption is relatively lower.

The monsoon has been particularly vigorous over Kerala this year, with several districts already receiving above-normal precipitation over the past week. The IMD has attributed the intensified rainfall to the active monsoon conditions over the Arabian Sea, which have been influencing the southern peninsula.
