Kerala Rains: Eight Dead, Thousands Shifted to Relief Camps, Says CMO
At least eight people have died in rain-related incidents across Kerala as heavy rainfall lashed the state since Friday, according to the Chief Minister's Office (CMO). Thirteen others were injured in the downpour that disrupted normal life in several districts.
The CMO said 5,792 people have been moved to 209 relief camps opened by the district administrations. The rains also destroyed 27 houses completely and partially damaged 196 homes, leaving many families homeless.
In a press release, the state government assured full assistance to the families of the deceased and those who lost their homes and livelihoods. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is personally coordinating with the Revenue Minister, district in-charge ministers, and district administrations to assess the damage and oversee relief operations, the release said.
Although the intensity of rainfall has reduced compared to the previous day, officials said cleaning operations have begun in flooded areas. The Chief Minister has appealed to political party workers and voluntary organisations to join the cleaning drive, promising adequate government support for the efforts.
The CMO has also advised continued vigilance in hilly regions prone to landslips, which remain a major risk during prolonged monsoon spells. Kerala has experienced devastating landslides in past years, and authorities are urging residents in vulnerable zones to remain alert.
The India Meteorological Department had earlier issued heavy rainfall alerts for several districts in the state. The current spell is part of the ongoing southwest monsoon, which often brings intense precipitation to Kerala's coastal and mountainous terrain.
Local administrations are focusing on providing food, drinking water, and medical aid to those in relief camps. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to clear roads and restore power supply in affected areas.
The government said damage assessment is ongoing and that compensation will be provided to the affected families as per existing norms. Officials have been directed to expedite the disbursal of relief funds.
