Kerala Rains: Alert Stays as Waters Recede, Relief Camps Shelter Hundreds

Heavy rainfall that battered Kerala's Malappuram and Palakkad districts showed signs of easing on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, but authorities maintained a cautious stance, keeping disaster preparedness measures in place. The respite in downpour brought some relief to residents, yet the lingering threat of rain-related incidents kept officials on edge.

The Public Works Department (PWD) closed the Vengara-Malappuram road at Edayipalath, near Panakkad, following a mudslide reported on Monday. Traffic has been diverted to alternative routes. In a precautionary move, educational institutions in both districts remained shut for the day, a decision announced a day earlier.

Water levels in the Bharathapuzha, Kadalundipuzha, Chaliyar, and Kunthipuzha rivers began to recede, offering a glimmer of hope. However, district administrations urged people living in hilly terrains and along riverbanks to stay vigilant. Officials also warned residents against venturing into waterbodies, which remain dangerous despite easing rains.

Relief operations are underway in Malappuram, where 13 relief camps have been opened across the Eranad, Kondotty, Nilambur, Tirurangadi, and Ponnani taluks. A total of 441 people from 97 families, including 148 men, 199 women, and 94 children, are currently sheltered in these camps. The largest facility is at GLP School, Thavalakkulam in Ponnani taluk, hosting 106 people, while DUHSS, Panakkad, is accommodating 103 evacuees. Five camps in Eranad have taken in 210 people, and four camps in Tirurangadi shelter 104. The remaining camps are spread across Kondotty, Nilambur, and Ponnani.

In Palakkad, a tragic incident has cast a shadow over the region. The death toll from the Thennilapuram electrocution accident rose to two after Radhika, 36, wife of Radhakrishnan of Vadakkethara, succumbed to her injuries at the Government District Hospital, Palakkad, on Tuesday morning. Her mother-in-law, Sharada, had died on Saturday under similar circumstances.

According to officials, Sharada was electrocuted while hanging clothes on an iron-wire clothesline attached to an iron pole. Radhika sustained critical injuries while attempting to rescue her. Preliminary investigations suggest that a temporary power connection for construction work had developed an electrical leak, energising the iron pole and the clothesline. The police have initiated a probe to determine whether violations of electrical safety norms contributed to the accident.

The recurring monsoon spells in Kerala have historically triggered landslides, flooding, and infrastructure failures, making preparedness a year-round exercise for authorities. The current situation underscores the importance of adhering to safety guidelines during such emergencies, especially in vulnerable zones.

As the rains ease, district administrations are focusing on rehabilitation and monitoring. Officials have assured that relief measures will continue until the situation fully stabilises. Residents have been advised to cooperate with authorities and report any emerging hazards promptly.
