Kerala Police braces for major top-level reshuffle as DGP Nitin Agrawal retires

The Kerala Police is set for a significant administrative overhaul at its top ranks following the retirement of senior IPS officer Nitin Agrawal, who served as Director General of Kerala Fire and Rescue Services. Mr. Agrawal, a 1989-batch officer, retired on Friday, creating a vacancy in the DGP rank and prompting discussions on a series of appointments.

According to officials, the restructuring has been necessitated not only by Mr. Agrawal's retirement but also by the suspension of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) M.R. Ajith Kumar. This suspension has left the post of Managing Director of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation (BEVCO) vacant for nearly a week, adding urgency to the reshuffle process.

Among the names being considered for promotion to the DGP rank is S. Sreejith, currently the Director General of Kerala Prisons and Correctional Services. Sources indicate that Sreejith is next in line for the seniority-based promotion, though no official confirmation has been made. Government orders regarding appointments to several important IPS positions are expected in the coming days, officials said.

Mr. Agrawal's farewell ceremony was held at the SAP ground in Peroorkada, where he was honoured with a ceremonial parade. Speaking on the occasion, he described the Kerala Police as a model force for the country. He said the experience and training he received in the state had greatly contributed to his professional career and enabled him to serve more effectively in different assignments.

The 1989-batch IPS officer has received several prestigious honours during his service, including the Medal for Meritorious Service in 2007, the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2014, and multiple gold medals and commendations from various armed forces.

The farewell ceremony was attended by State Police Chief Ravada A. Chandrasekhar, Road Safety Commissioner Yogesh Gupta, Vigilance Director Manoj Abraham, and other senior police officers.

The impending reshuffle is expected to have widespread implications for the state police administration. The DGP rank is the highest in the state police hierarchy, and the vacancy caused by Mr. Agrawal's retirement is likely to set off a chain of promotions. Senior IPS officers are typically promoted based on seniority and the availability of vacancies, subject to government approval.
