Kerala HC Orders Swift Compensation for Wayanad Debris Slip Victims, Speedy Handover of Bodies

The Kerala High Court on Friday directed the State government to expedite compensation disbursement to victims of the Wayanad debris slip and cover medical expenses for the injured. The court also ordered the earliest possible handover of deceased bodies to families.

A Division Bench comprising Justices A.K. Jayasankar and A.K. Preeta issued the directives while hearing a suo motu petition initiated after a major landslide in 2024. The State informed the court that search operations for missing persons are ongoing using excavation, cadaver dogs, and manual labour.

The debris slip occurred on July 7 at the entrance of a twin tunnel under construction at Kalladi in Wayanad, near Chooralmala—site of a massive landslide last year. The court noted that construction activities at the site had been ordered stopped by the State in May, prior to the incident.

The State has been asked to ensure relief reaches all affected families promptly. The next hearing is scheduled later this month.
