Kerala floods 2026: Record 361 mm rain, but warnings came too late

The extreme rainfall that battered parts of Kerala this week has exposed significant gaps in the state’s weather forecasting and disaster preparedness. According to data from the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), a rain gauge at Vadasserikkara in Pathanamthitta recorded a staggering 361 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2026.

The Anakkampoyil region in Kozhikode received 340 mm of rainfall over 35 hours, while Meppadi in Wayanad recorded 177 mm. The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) automatic weather station at Laha in Pathanamthitta recorded 250 mm during the same 24-hour window. Despite these extreme figures, the IMD did not issue a red alert before the event, and state disaster management authorities failed to recognize the unfolding crisis in the ghat regions.

Neetha K. Gopal, Director of the IMD’s Thiruvananthapuram office, told The Hindu that, technically, the rainfall did not meet the criteria for a cloudburst—defined as sudden, extremely heavy rain where a small area receives 100 mm or more within one hour. However, she acknowledged that the rainfall was exceptionally heavy, particularly on Friday night, and triggered flash floods.

This incident mirrors the recent debris slip tragedy in Wayanad, where eight people lost their lives after torrential rain caused a devastating debris flow. In both cases, the IMD issued red alert warnings only after the disaster had already occurred.

Weather scientists point to a combination of factors behind the intense rainfall. An offshore trough, which normally enhances monsoon rainfall in Kerala, extended only up to north Kerala from Gujarat on Friday. Meanwhile, Idukki and Wayanad had recorded a monsoon deficit of more than 50% during the first two months of the season. This deficiency led to higher surface temperatures, strengthening local convection. When this moisture-laden convection interacted with monsoon winds and the Western Ghats, it formed cumulonimbus clouds, producing cloudburst-like downpours.

According to the scientists, the IMD, while monitoring the semi-permanent features of the monsoon, failed to adequately account for these regional temperature-driven convection patterns. The agency also did not factor in how the Western Ghats would amplify cloud formation.

Political reactions were swift. Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary Binoy Viswam said, “The recurring rain-related calamities in Kerala expose shortcomings in the State’s disaster preparedness and weather forecasting systems.” He added that while rescue operations were the immediate priority, the latest incident underscores the need for serious introspection into the state’s disaster management.

In a positive development, IMD Director Gopal said rainfall activity in Kerala is expected to decrease in the coming days as the depression over central India weakens.
