Kerala Declares July 20 Holiday for Schools, Colleges Ahead of FIFA World Cup Final
Thiruvananthapuram, July 18: The Kerala government has declared Monday, July 20, 2026, a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, in view of the FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain. The decision was announced by Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan, following widespread demands from students, parents, and educational bodies.
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) clarified that there will be no change in the pre-decided examination schedule on that day. An official said the final, scheduled to kick off at 12:30 a.m. Indian Standard Time, would keep a significant section of students and parents awake until early hours, disrupting the normal day’s activities.
The CMO stated that it had received numerous requests for a holiday from students, parents, and institutions. Mr. Satheesan directed the General Education Department to officially notify the holiday and issue proceedings. General Education Minister N. Shamshudeen’s office also faced similar demands, prompting the government to act in line with public sentiment.
Politicians from various parties also supported the move. Former General Education Minister and CPI(M) leader V. Sivankutty, as well as Pala Municipality chairperson Diya Binu Pulikandam, requested the government to declare a holiday to allow students and parents to recover after what is expected to be a closely contested final and ensuing celebrations.
Football fans and associations across the state welcomed the decision. Many residents’ associations and sports clubs have set up large LED screens in public squares and parks for live viewing. The police have ordered full-scale deployment to manage the anticipated large crowds, including families. Some residents’ associations have also arranged fireworks to mark the occasion.
