Kerala: CPI(M) MP Rahim Accuses UDF Government of Insulting Fisherfolk
Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and Member of Parliament A.A. Rahim on Saturday accused the United Democratic Front (UDF) government of Kerala of insulting the fishing community. His remarks came during a visit to the families of those affected by recent tragedies at sea, including the disappearance of a fisherman from Pulluvila in Vizhinjam and the incident at Muthalappozhi.
Mr. Rahim visited the home of John, a fisherman who went missing at sea from Pulluvila. He also met the families of those affected by the recent tragedy at Muthalappozhi, a major fishing harbour in Thiruvananthapuram district. Later, he inspected the accident site at Muthalappozhi to assess the situation and the ongoing rescue efforts. During his visit, he questioned the State government's response to these incidents.
The CPI(M) leader alleged that the State government had failed to take adequate measures to protect the fishing community. He further claimed that the families were left to fend for themselves in the aftermath of the tragedies. Mr. Rahim also criticised the Central government, stating that it had repeatedly failed to provide adequate and timely weather warnings to fishermen. He argued that the lack of early alerts had contributed to the loss of lives and livelihoods.
Kerala's coastal belt has witnessed several incidents of fishermen being caught in rough seas, leading to tragic outcomes. The fishing community, which depends on the sea for its livelihood, remains vulnerable to sudden weather changes. In the past, there have been demands for better early warning systems and improved safety mechanisms to prevent such accidents. Mr. Rahim's visit and allegations come at a time when the UDF government, led by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, is facing criticism from the opposition over its handling of various issues. The CPI(M), which is part of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) opposition, has been consistently attacking the UDF government on matters of governance and welfare.
