Kerala Congress chief race: Generational shift vs social balance

Three months after assuming power in Kerala, the Congress is set to choose a new state party president. The incumbent, Sunny Joseph, has been inducted into the state Cabinet, creating a vacancy. But the decision on his successor is not merely about filling a post; it will signal the party’s strategic direction.

The party faces a choice between promoting a younger generation known for aggressive, campaign-oriented politics and retaining veterans who have relied on consensus-building. This decision will shape the organisation's approach in the coming years.

Social equations are equally critical. The Congress-led United Democratic Front's landslide victory in the 2026 Assembly elections was driven largely by support from Muslim and Christian communities. However, much of the top leadership of both the government and the party comes from the dominant Nair community. This includes Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, All India Congress Committee general secretary K.C. Venugopal, and Lok Sabha member Shashi Tharoor. Muslims are represented in the government through the Congress and its ally, the Indian Union Muslim League.

The choice of the next state president must therefore be examined beyond these communities to broaden the party's social coalition.

Among the older generation, the main contenders are Kodikunnil Suresh (64), an eight-term MP from the reserved Mavelikkara constituency and a special invitee to the Congress Working Committee, and Benny Behanan (73), MP from Chalakudy. Mr. Suresh is the party's most prominent Dalit face at the national level. However, the state Cabinet already has two Dalit ministers, a factor the high command may weigh. Mr. Behanan belongs to the Jacobite Syrian Christian community, an important support base of the UDF. With the BJP making sustained efforts to woo Christians, the UDF government has appointed two ministers from the community, breaking from previous Congress governments where different denominations were represented.

The younger contenders include Mathew Kuzhalnadan (49), MLA from Muvattupuzha, and Shafi Parambil (43), MP from Vatakara. Mr. Kuzhalnadan belongs to the non-Catholic Syrian Christian community, while Mr. Parambil is from the Muslim community, a key UDF constituency. Mr. Kuzhalnadan was a vocal critic of the previous Pinarayi Vijayan government and is said to have missed a ministerial berth after speaking out against the IUML's attempts to influence the chief ministerial choice.

Community equations may prove decisive if the Congress opts to keep a Christian as state president. The contest could then be between Mr. Behanan and Mr. Kuzhalnadan, both from central Kerala's Christian belt, where the BJP has made visible inroads. Mr. Parambil represents a Malabar constituency with a significant Muslim electorate, where retaining community support is vital for the UDF. Both younger leaders are said to be protégés of K.C. Venugopal.

In whichever direction the party leans, the selection of the next Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president is likely to be interpreted as a signal of how the Congress intends to build its social coalition in a state where it has recently won decisive electoral support.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
