Kerala Chief Minister Satheesan presents first UDF government's revised budget for 2026-27

The stage is set for the presentation of the first Budget of the United Democratic Front (UDF) government in Kerala on Friday, June 19, 2026. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, who also holds the Finance portfolio, is expected to outline his administration's priorities while addressing what he has described as one of the state's most challenging fiscal situations.

The revised Budget comes nearly two weeks after the government tabled a white paper on Kerala's finances. The document detailed mounting debt, unpaid liabilities, and shrinking fiscal space, highlighting the financial constraints faced by the state.

Mr. Satheesan, whose UDF government was sworn in on May 18, has repeatedly stated that the administration is operating under severe financial limitations and must find new resources to fulfill its promises. The budget is expected to reflect these constraints while attempting to balance developmental needs and fiscal prudence.

Analysts will be watching for measures to address revenue shortfalls, expenditure rationalisation, and potential new taxes. The budget also comes amid expectations from various sectors for increased allocations in health, education, and infrastructure.

The opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) has criticised the government's handling of the economy, accusing it of exaggerating the fiscal crisis. However, the government maintains that transparency and honest assessment of finances are necessary for long-term stability.

This is the first budget presented by the UDF government since it assumed office, and it will set the tone for its fiscal policy over the next year.
