Kerala Braces for Heavy Rains: Orange Alert Issued for 12 Districts
Kerala is bracing for another day of heavy rains and potential flooding on Sunday, August 2, 2026, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for 12 districts. The latest warning comes amid a series of stormy weather conditions that have affected the state over the past week, disrupting normal life in several regions.
The districts placed under the orange alert are Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasargod. According to the IMD, these areas are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, which may lead to flash floods, mudslides, and waterlogging in roads and residential neighbourhoods.
In contrast, the IMD has not issued any weather alert for Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts. However, fishermen have been explicitly cautioned against venturing into the sea along the Kerala coast, as strong winds and rough waves are expected.
In response to the forecast, the state government has directed all district administrations to remain on high alert and take necessary precautions. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Kerala State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been mobilised, with teams positioned in the districts considered most vulnerable to mudslides and flash floods. The personnel are equipped with rescue gear and are prepared to respond to emergencies swiftly.
The recent rains have also raised water levels in the Mullaperiyar dam, which is under the supervision of the Idukki district administration. In light of this, the Idukki Collector has issued an advisory urging people to avoid night travel on ghat sections, where the risk of landslides is heightened.
The orange alert is the second-highest warning level in the IMD's colour-coded system. It indicates that weather conditions are likely to worsen, and both authorities and the public should be prepared for significant disruptions. The alert serves as a prompt for district administrations to review their emergency response plans and ensure that relief measures are in place.
Residents in the affected districts are advised to stay informed through official sources and follow instructions from local authorities. People have been urged to avoid crossing flooded roads, stay away from rivers and streams, and relocate to safer areas if evacuation orders are given. Families living in landslide-prone zones are particularly advised to remain vigilant.
Emergency services have been kept on standby, and district control rooms are functioning round-the-clock. Residents can contact local authorities or disaster helplines for assistance. The authorities have also appealed to the public to cooperate with disaster management teams and refrain from spreading unverified information that could cause panic.
