Kerala Braces for Heavy Rains as IMD Issues Orange Alert in Three Districts

Heavy rains continued to lash parts of Kerala on Thursday, July 9, 2026, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for three districts in the state. The alert, indicating very heavy rainfall, was declared for Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad.

The IMD also issued a yellow alert for six other districts: Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. An orange alert signifies rainfall between 115 mm and 204 mm, while a yellow alert indicates heavy rainfall ranging from 64 mm to 115 mm.

The downpour led to property damage across several parts of the state, with uprooted trees and broken branches causing disruptions. Waterlogging on roads and flooding in low-lying areas were also reported from various locations, affecting daily life and transportation.

Local authorities have advised residents in the affected districts to remain cautious and avoid venturing into flood-prone areas. The IMD has urged people to follow safety guidelines as the monsoon season continues.
