Kasaragod on High Alert for Two More Days as Heavy Rain Persists; 208 in Relief Camps

The Kasaragod District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has directed all departments to remain on high alert for the next two days as heavy rain continues to affect parts of the district. The decision was taken during a review meeting chaired by District Collector Arjun Pandian on Sunday, August 2, 2026.

Officials said relief operations have been coordinated efficiently over the past few days. The Collector instructed all departments to stay prepared to tackle any emergency and to ensure swift response to any new incidents.

Currently, five relief camps are functioning in the district — three in Vellarikundu taluk and two in Hosdurg taluk. They are sheltering 208 people from 59 families, comprising 85 men, 89 women and 34 children. The camps have been opened at Palavayal, Kinnanur-Karinthalam, Perol and Klayikode villages. In addition, 67 families have moved to the houses of relatives.

The district has reported 11 partially damaged houses — five in Vellarikundu taluk, three in Kasaragod taluk, two in Manjeswaram taluk and one in another affected area. An orange alert remains in force along the Madur and Kariyangode rivers. People living on the riverbanks have been advised to move to safer places or relatives' houses.

Two landslips were reported at Thayyeni in Kattamkavala. Forest officials are trying to identify the origin of an earlier landslip. The Collector has directed geologists, soil survey officials, hazard analysts, and officials from Forest, Revenue and Local Self-Government departments to jointly study the affected area. The Kanhangad Revenue Divisional Officer will coordinate the exercise.

The Collector also ordered that damage assessment be completed without delay through joint inspection by Revenue, Agriculture and Local Self-Government departments. This is to facilitate prompt disbursal of compensation to affected families.

District Medical Officer K.T. Rekha said medical officers have been assigned to all relief camps. Priority is being given to pregnant women, elderly people, palliative care patients, dialysis patients and those with hypertension. She stressed the need for strict disease prevention measures in view of the reported H1N1 cases in the district, adding that adequate anti-viral medicines and essential drugs are available.

“Only boiled drinking water should be used in camps, and those handling food should maintain hygiene,” she said. Hospitals have also been asked to keep additional beds ready for emergencies.

Officials reported that two bridges at Achamthuruthi and Bheemanady have been completely damaged. Fisheries officials said the sea remains calm and no fishers have ventured out. Fire and Rescue Services officials said all personnel and equipment are on standby for emergency response.
