Karnataka to replace third language with AI in 1,652 government high schools; Hindi teachers oppose
The Karnataka government has decided to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a skill subject in place of a third language in 1,652 government high schools under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) starting from the 2026-27 academic year.
The 'Samagra Shikshana-Karnataka' (SSK) has issued a circular directing the appointment of guest teachers for AI and preparatory arrangements at the school level. The move is part of the state's implementation of the National Education Policy, aiming to enhance employability skills and professional competence among students.
According to the circular, AI skill education will be introduced in 1,642 government high schools, including 1,180 newly approved schools, 381 NSQF schools approved in previous years, and 81 existing single-sector schools where subjects like beauty and wellness, retail, and apparel are being replaced by AI. Additionally, 10 more schools are expected to be covered, making a total of 1,652 schools.
The Block Education Officer has been instructed to appoint one AI guest teacher per school. For schools where AI replaces the third language, the existing third language teachers are to be redeployed to nearby government schools facing teacher shortages.
However, the Karnataka High School Hindi Language Teachers' Association has strongly opposed the move. In a letter to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Monday, the association urged the withdrawal of the circular, arguing that it would jeopardise their future.
“Implementing an AI course along with a third language will help children learn AI along with languages. The three-language formula should be continued in Karnataka, and the order issued by the SSK should be withdrawn immediately,” said D. Manjunath, president of the association.
The association's objection highlights the tension between modern skill development and traditional language education. The government has not yet responded to the association's demands.
