Karnataka to Challenge CWRC Order on Cauvery Water Release; CWMA Meets July 30
The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) is scheduled to meet on Thursday, July 30, to consider Karnataka's appeal against a directive to release water to Tamil Nadu. The directive, issued by the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC), requires Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water daily for 15 days.
Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced on Wednesday that the state will file an appeal before the CWMA, the apex body for monitoring Cauvery water releases as per the Supreme Court's orders. The CM, currently in New Delhi, stated that consultations have been held with the State Advocate-General and legal experts regarding the appeal.
The CWRC's order has sparked protests among farmers in the Cauvery basin area, who oppose the release of water to Tamil Nadu. The long-standing water-sharing dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu is governed by a Supreme Court-mandated framework, with the CWMA overseeing compliance by upper riparian states.
The CWMA meeting is expected to address Karnataka's objections and decide on the water release schedule. The outcome will be closely watched by both states, as the dispute often triggers political and social tensions.
