Karnataka Police Exam: No Ban on Religious Attire, Government Vows Transparency

The Karnataka government has assured candidates that all necessary measures are in place to conduct the police constable recruitment examination in a transparent, fair, and smooth manner. Home Minister Priyank Kharge made the statement during a press conference on Saturday, emphasising the government's commitment to a recruitment process free of irregularities and confusion.

Mr. Kharge said detailed instructions regarding dress code and permissible items have already been printed on the candidates' hall tickets. He urged applicants to strictly follow these guidelines to avoid any last-minute issues at examination centres.

Addressing confusion arising from social media posts, the Minister clarified that the government has not imposed any ban on religious attire. Candidates may wear religious clothing and ornaments. However, those doing so must arrive at the examination centre two hours and thirty minutes before the exam begins to complete mandatory security screening.

The Minister also listed items that will not be allowed inside the examination hall: mobile phones, smartwatches, electronic gadgets, calculators, pen drives, books, and bags. These restrictions, he said, are intended to protect the integrity and transparency of the selection process.

Mr. Kharge further clarified that there is no restriction on wearing religious symbols and ornaments such as the sacred thread (janivara), Shivadhara, mangalsutra, rudraksha, bangles, rings, kumkum, and other similar items associated with religious practices.

Recruitment examinations for public positions are pivotal moments in the lives of thousands of young candidates. The Karnataka government's explicit assurances are aimed at reinforcing trust in the process. The Home Minister's remarks are particularly significant given the widespread use of social media, where unverified claims can create confusion.

The advance reporting time of two and a half hours for candidates wearing religious attire is designed to allow thorough checks while ensuring that the examination starts on schedule. Officials will be deployed to manage the process smoothly, with due respect to candidates' religious practices.

The clarifications come ahead of a large-scale recruitment examination, where thousands of candidates are expected to participate. The government's proactive communication aims to reduce anxiety among candidates and ensure that no one is unfairly disadvantaged due to misunderstandings about the rules.

Authorities have also set up helplines and information channels to address candidate queries. The examination is expected to be conducted with strict adherence to prescribed protocols, with a focus on merit-based selection. Candidates are advised to keep their hall tickets and valid identification ready, and to comply with all guidelines to ensure a hassle-free experience.
