Karnataka govt forms panel to probe alleged irregularities at Kidwai cancer institute

The Karnataka government has constituted a three-member committee to investigate allegations of irregularities at the State-run Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, a premier cancer care hospital in Bengaluru. The move follows a formal complaint filed by Asha Parveen, former Chief Administrative Officer of the institute, who cited irregularities in administrative matters, financial transactions, tender processes, and procurement activities.

The committee, constituted under an order issued by the Directorate of Medical Education on July 27, will be headed by Usha Rani, Chief Administrative Officer of the Directorate of Medical Education. The other two members are Vishnu Prasad, Chief Accounts Officer at the Institute of Gastroenterology Sciences and Organ Transplant (IGOT), and Manjula, Administrative Officer at the Institute of Nephro-Urology. All three officials bring experience in medical administration and finance, making the panel well-suited to scrutinise the claims.

According to the official order, the committee has been tasked with conducting a detailed inquiry into the alleged irregularities and submitting a comprehensive report at the earliest. The scope of the probe covers an examination of financial records, tender documentation, and procurement procedures, as well as administrative decision-making at the institute.

Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, established in 1958, is one of the oldest and most respected cancer treatment and research centres in South India. It serves thousands of patients annually, many from economically weaker sections, offering subsidised care. The allegations, therefore, have significant public interest, as any mismanagement could affect patient services and trust in a vital public health institution.
