Kakinada to Sell Rice at Subsidised Rates from August 1 to Combat Price Surge
In response to a sharp increase in rice prices in the open market, the Andhra Pradesh Civil Supplies Department will introduce subsidised sales of super fine rice and other varieties from August 1 in Kakinada district under a pilot Market Intervention Programme (MIP).
Announcing the initiative on Thursday, Kakinada Joint Collector Apoorva Bharat stated that three varieties of rice will be sold at Rythu Bazaars (farmers' markets) to ease the burden on consumers. Super fine rice will be available at ₹52 per kilogram, steam rice (BPT variety) at ₹52, and raw BPT rice at ₹50 per kilogram.
The Civil Supplies Department, Agriculture Department, and the Kakinada District Rice Millers Association will jointly oversee procurement, transportation, and supply to ensure uninterrupted availability. Special counters will be set up at all Rythu Bazaars for the sale of these varieties.
“The Rice Millers Association has been directed to guarantee consistent supply for the sales counters,” Mr. Apoorva Bharat added. The programme aims to provide relief to households facing high market prices and will be monitored for potential expansion to other districts.
