J&K NEET Topper Hadiya Nisar Credits Parents, Avoids Social Media and Negativity

Hadiya Nisar, an 18-year-old from South Kashmir’s Anantnag, has secured All India Rank 99 in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) UG 2024, topping the exam among candidates from Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking to reporters on Friday, she attributed her success to her parents’ unwavering support and her decision to stay away from social media and negative thoughts.

“My parents always motivated and uplifted me, and it is because of them that I kept going,” Nisar said. “Though I am overwhelmed at the moment, it is a feeling of pride and joy.”

Nisar’s achievement comes amid a turbulent examination cycle. The NEET UG 2024 exam was initially conducted in May but was cancelled following allegations of a paper leak, prompting widespread protests. The retest, held on June 23, saw over 20 lakh candidates appear across 5,440 centres nationwide. Nisar’s result is particularly notable given the additional pressure of a re-examination.

The topper, who aims to become a surgeon, said she avoided social media completely during her preparation to maintain focus. “Negative thoughts can be distracting. I chose to stay off social media and instead spent time with my family and studies,” she explained.

Nisar’s journey from a small town in Kashmir to the top of the NEET rankings has inspired many in the region. Local leaders and educators have praised her discipline and resilience. “She is a role model for young students in J&K, showing that with hard work and the right mindset, one can overcome any challenge,” said her school principal.

The NEET UG exam is the gateway for admissions to medical and dental colleges across India. With her rank, Nisar is eligible for a seat in a top government medical college. She has not yet decided on her college preference but is considering pursuing MBBS from a central institution.

The controversy over the paper leak led to demands for a thorough investigation and reforms in the examination system. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the leak. Meanwhile, students and parents have called for greater transparency and security in future exams. Nisar’s success, however, serves as a positive note amid the controversy.

India has achieved 95% coverage for both doses of the measles vaccine, a first for the country, according to WHO/UNICEF data. Despite high coverage, over 4.5 lakh children missed the vaccine, and cases persist due to measles' high contagiousness. The milestone reflects sustained public health efforts, but challenges remain in reaching the last mile.
