J&K CM Omar Abdullah's Article 370, PoK Remarks Spark Political Row

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has drawn sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over his recent remarks on Article 370 and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), with the party describing his comments as “unfortunate” and “irresponsible.”

Speaking at a public event in Srinagar on Tuesday, Abdullah reiterated his opposition to the Central government’s 2019 decision to abrogate Article 370, which had granted special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. He also commented on PoK, suggesting that any discussion on its integration with India cannot ignore the aspirations of the people living there.

“The abrogation of Article 370 was done without proper consultation and has not brought the promised peace and development,” Abdullah said. “On PoK, we must recognise that the people there have their own political consciousness. Any solution must involve dialogue and respect for their rights.”

The BJP was quick to respond. Party spokesperson and national secretary P. Muralidhar Rao termed the remarks “unfortunate and irresponsible,” accusing the Chief Minister of undermining the constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir and questioning India’s claim over PoK.

“Omar Abdullah’s statements reflect a mindset that is opposed to the integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India. His comments on PoK are especially troubling as they cast doubt on the nation’s unwavering position that PoK is an integral part of India,” Rao said in a statement.

The exchange has reignited the political debate over Article 370, which was a contentious issue before the 2019 revocation. While the BJP and its allies view the abrogation as a historic correction that has brought the region closer to the national mainstream, opposition parties, including the National Conference (NC), which Abdullah leads, have repeatedly called for its restoration.

Political analysts note that Abdullah’s remarks come at a time when the Union Territory is preparing for assembly elections. The NC has made the restoration of Article 370 a key campaign promise, while the BJP has countered that the issue is settled and there will be no rollback.

In response to the BJP’s criticism, Abdullah said his comments were misrepresented. “I did not question India’s sovereignty over PoK. I only spoke about the need for a realistic and humane approach to the people there. It is the BJP that is creating a distraction from the real issues facing the region, such as unemployment and the lack of full statehood,” he said.

The controversy also highlights the differing interpretations of PoK’s status. India’s official position is that PoK is an integral part of Indian territory that is under illegal occupation by Pakistan. Successive Indian governments have maintained this stance, but the manner of its reintegration has never been clearly articulated. Abdullah’s remarks open a rare window into the complexities that any future reconciliation would entail.

Political observers say the timing of the controversy is significant. With elections expected later this year, both the BJP and the NC are keen to consolidate their respective support bases. The BJP is likely to use Abdullah’s remarks to paint the NC as soft on territorial integrity, while the NC may use the criticism to bolster its image as a defender of Kashmiri identity.

Meanwhile, civil society groups in Jammu and Kashmir have expressed mixed reactions. Some agree with Abdullah’s call for dialogue, while others believe his statements could be counterproductive. “We need a solution that is acceptable to all stakeholders. But public statements that can be interpreted as questioning the national consensus may hurt the cause of peace,” said a Srinagar-based human rights activist, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has also demanded an apology from the Chief Minister, but Abdullah has refused, insisting that he stands by his comments. The exchange is likely to continue in the coming days as political leaders gear up for the electoral battle in the Union Territory.
